Artist's Comments

So I guess it's done. I feel like there is so much more to do. But I'm not really sure what. I guess I'm just never satisfied, even though I think this picture came out quit well.

Oh.. I had a reference picture for the pose:

Oh my, this is really coming along nicely! You're not going to do anything else to it? Don't get me wrong, I think it looks great! Earlier you had a tendency to use unnaturally "soft" strokes on skin and particularly in faces, but I think you've pretty much completely done away with that, which is a good thing. It looks very deep, and very whole.

Ohhh, very nice!

Yes, I agree. Actually now that I study the finished product I believe that I've come up with the problem in most of my art. Similar to your comment, I have very weak execution of textures. That is probably why some of my pictures tend to look 'soft' and blurry. I made a big effort to put a variety of textures in this picture. However, attempting that only made me realize how poor I am at it. I guess it gives me something to focus on in future pictures.

I think this is really a great and beautiful start. I would suggest getting rid of the lines on it, though, since they're fairly inconsistent; some areas and have them and some do not. They also make it seem more cartoonish and it looks like you've made an effort to make it seem more realistic. Textures are rough and hard to figure out, but if you can find photos on the internet to look at while you're working it does make it 10x easier to duplicate that. I'll be featuring this in my journal. :)

Thanks.

I did actually try to get rid of the lines. I guess they look inconsistent because I didn't find all of them. I had the linework and colors worked in photoshop. Then I flattened the image and did all the details in Corel Painter. I was using a smudgy oil brush though so it was kind of hard to completely eliminate the darker lines. The decision was either keep the lines and paint over them, or don't use the lines and try and recreate all the details without them. I suppose I should have done the latter, but I think it would have taken significantly longer.

Looks really good. The shading is very soft that makes it look smudged, but other than that very nice work.

Tag, you're it...

Powerful piece. The colors and lighting really work in this.
